About

Why Homestead Plain exists

Most of what you read online about growing your own remedies, storing food, or preparing your home falls into one of two camps. Either it's trying to frighten you into buying something, or it's a company with a product to protect. Homestead Plain is neither.

We're an independent publication with a simple aim: explain the old, practical skills of self-reliant living in plain English — what actually works, what's worth your money, and, just as importantly, where the limits are. No doomsday language. No miracle cures. Just the kind of straight answer you'd hope to get from a knowledgeable neighbor over the fence.

What we cover

Three areas, because they're the foundation of a more self-reliant home: backyard medicine (growing and using medicinal herbs), food storage (keeping and preserving food the old-fashioned way), and home preparedness (sensible first-aid and readiness for outages and emergencies).

How we stay honest

No outside company decides what appears on this site. Some of our articles include affiliate links to books, kits, or tools — and when they do, we say so plainly on the page. We only point to something if it genuinely fits the guide and we'd suggest it to a friend. You can always follow our advice without buying anything; the information stands on its own.

An important note on limits

Home skills go a long way, but they don't replace professionals. Nothing here is medical, legal, or professional advice, and it isn't meant to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. We'll always tell you when something is a job for a doctor or a qualified expert. Please treat our articles as a starting point for your own informed decisions — not a substitute for proper care.

Questions, corrections, or suggestions? We'd genuinely like to hear them — get in touch.
